Larry sultan is a photographer from brooklyn and died age 63, he was a nationally acclaimed photographer and a teacher. SULtan is. mostly known for photographing homes and turning images of people and places into ideas, he says ' in my work there is a lot of ambivalence, wanting it to be true knowing its not'.
Larry sultans image from the book is a image of an elderly couple sitting next to each other, i picked this image since I think it shows how love is all around and how elderly people still feel love for people and have 'childish' crushes o each other like they are young, the image looks as if they are having a last conversation before getting into bed, the colours are all very yellowish and tinted giving a vintage feeling to the image. the camera is straight on and they look almost centred, like eye level as if we are in the same room and sitting on the other side of the bed. this image looks almost candid like they didn't know we was taking the pictures and weere just having a casual chat and someone pulled out a camera.

Delphine Carmona
Delphine carmona
Delphine is a photographer and art director based in Argentina , she is mostly interested In shadows and light to add contrast and more depth to her pictures she mainly uses sunlight close to sunset so the light is golden, she also uses her arms or hands of her models to create shadows in the sunlight, her images rarely have any faces in it. Carmona uses the light to highlight specific objects such as her hands or things like flowers creating a mood or a aura even around the most simple of objects. I picked this image because it has something different to her usual work, her face was in the image. There is still many aspects of light in the image from the shadow from her figure onto the sheet of paper to the darkest part of the picture being the corner, the image leaves me wondering to who took it since bothof her hands are in the picture or are they not her hands, the perfect angle is needed to take the photo since the mirror who reflect something else if the camera was in another position. Carmonas face being the only focused thing in the whole image immediately catches my eye. The mirror also almost looks photoshopped into the image because her face is crystal clear. |
Larry sultan inspired images
images i've took around my house of multiple objects which I think would look best under the camera, this ultimately felt very odd since as i'm so used to my home and seeing the familiar it has lost that speciality because it is something that i see constantly so I found this more difficult finding the beauty in my own home rather to taken things outside where it is constantly changing and ill be seeing new things everyday.
More larry sultan inspired photos which I took in school which remind me of aspects of my house.
all of these images are partially inspired by Larry sultan, I had to use my own artificial light to create these because it wasn't bright outside, I tried my best to have them all look as professional and minimalistic as possible by using the light in different areas and lowering or increasing the exposure.
mostly candid images of my family and friends.
all of these images are of my friends and family, I captured them for this project because they were creating a atmosphere of love and postivity which i tried my best to capture, having people around me that care about me feel better and more comfortable taking pictures of.
OLIVIA arthur project:home
Olivia Arthurs project 'waiting for Lorelei' is about her pregnancy journey and relationship with her family, she goes on to say that family is not a place or a thing its all about the people who are closest to you and the ones you love. Her images are all in black and white which I think matches her style of work. In the second image she has utilised light and shadow by having her silhouette of her pregnancy bump projected onto the wall, I really like this image because its giving me the strong emotion of motherhood and how her body is changing throughout her pregnancy, its giving off this emotion because Lorelei's cot is already set up with her mobile and blankets awaiting her for when she is born.
Olivia Arthurs talks about how she was younger her family was her, her parents and her siblings but as time goes on it has changed to her husband and now her own little family which she has created. She captures intimate moments with her family bonding and expressing love and affection with each other but also capturing key life events like the birth of Lorelei. Her husband and her created a mini gallery underneath their house to document everything they have made together instead of working separately so they have something as a single body.

REflections and shadows
this is my shadows and reflections independent learning I have picked 2 images which I like most, I tried my best to capture shadows which are doubled or shadows that are in off shapes rather then just a line and creating a more abstract call on the image.
2 chosen images.
I have picked these images because I think they show what the task was through both of them the most, they both have contrasts of colour and show vibrancy compared to some others. the first one you can really see the shadows of the plants on the balcony and sort of looks like the balcony’s extended on the wall. the second picture has a symbolic sense to it like the sunset is nature and the rest is all manmade so its a mix of manmade and nature in one photo, the gradual contrast of the sunset from dark blue to pink creates an aura to the photo.
'jims terrible city'
I picked this book because the images are simple but effective, they're images from around shanghai of random buildings, shops or objects, no pictures up close of a person only from far away there also never looking in the camera. I picked this photographer because I feel like my work and his work are very similar due to taking street photography photos in the same aesthetic. His images only have a small caption on a separate page because his images are easy to understand whats going on, the captions are only a sentence long meaning that you have to divert your eyes elsewhere onto a separate page to find out the meaning of the image, but you may still be left questioning because the caption is so short. |
