DARK ROOM.
photograms are images composed by transparent or solid objects are being placed in a certain way onto light sensitive paper to mark out shadows or silhouettes to create a image into the paper which comes out under the developer, mainly done in the dark room under a red light. This is called cameraless photography since there is no camera involved only shadows.
Laszlo moholy
Moholy is a Hungarian painter and photographer who is highly influenced by constructivism. Moholy uses the dark room with objects and equipment to create shadows, like his hand which is obviously solid using his hand to block out the light completely and create a unique imprint of his hand onto the photographic paper. I really like his work since its similar to mine and how i would do it. It looks like he has used a mirror to do his work since some bits are light grey with his hand being really light then the back ground being black, Its a really cool idea to do that and i would like to take inspiration. other then using the dark room he also explores taking pictures in black and white portrait giving off a vintage feel to the photograph
I took inspiration to his images creating my own, making big amounts of white negative to mimic his with majority white rather then black, with clear shadows.
These are my tests in order to test both the aperture and the exposure times.,We opened the aperture on 5.6, using different shapes to experiment with, I personally don't like the outcome since the contrast of black and white isn't that drastic its more of a grey, I used different objects with had little transparency. I also didn’t t hold it under the developer long enough so they came out more grey rather then black/negative and I also left it under the enlarger for 7 seconds which was too long.
this time I used lots of transparent objects such as acetate with photographs on them of nature that I used previously when doing my GCSE, I layered them on the paper with acetate with words on in the light spaces so you can see them clearly, I only left it under the light for 3 seconds and layered the images as much as I could. I like the outcome much more then before and I can see the improvement. instead of solid objects `I used other transparent objects which worked better since the light can shine through and leave shadows such as rulers, bottles and clear phone cases.
Final piece
We went into the dark room and did our final pieces on A3, the second image is my trial run which the enlarger light wasn't large enough meaning that the photo was too grey, I need to make sure that i'm exposing the image for a long enough time, or left in the developer for the correct duration, to improve this i turned up the exposure and left it under there for 6 seconds instead of 3. this caused a major improvement since it layered the transparency’s more, `I also created more contrast by putting the dark areas on the light and the light on the dark which was really successful since their was no dull areas. my final piece came out brilliantly and better then expected, the test runs really helped me since i can experiment on what works best and then pieced everything together into a end result.

ARTISH RESEARCH
Christain schad.
Christian schad is a German photographer and painter born in 1894 and passed in 1982. His paintings are all Realistic, portraits of peoples faces and bodies. his photography show a lot of attention to detail , light colours and shadows. Lots of his dark room images he uses nature like dandelion seeds butterflies and flowers, some of his programs use harsh contrasts from white to black, and some others, with a light grey and minimal white. Man ray Man ray was born 1890 and passed in 1976, best known for his pioneering photography, he called his photographs rayographs with camera less photography on the dark room with also Working on surrealism. Most of his images are of people in black and white with a vintage feel. He explored different techniques with his “ray graphs” like solarisation which is when an image is recorded on a photographic print reversing the tone. Man rays work created new traditions in photography and opened up new doors for new photographers taking inspiration from his work. floris Neususs Floris was born 3rd march 1937 and died in 2020 , Floris was known for his contemporary photography who experiments with camera less photography using photograms. his most famous work was in his late 1960s, which naked figures are directly exposed to photographic paper in the dark room using shadows, these are called Nude grams I really like his work. since it looks like the women is on glass and were looking at her from underneath rather then it being a photogram, the details are really precise and you can see everything from the in betweens of her hands to where her hair is and shes looking down. |
Cyanotype
A cyanotype is camera less photography which uses light to imprint a image, I took 2 images one of branches the other with man made lines which I took of buildings, I turned them black and white then inverted them in photoshop. I then printed them out onto 1 A5 sheet which I put on acetate. To expand my work I then put the acetate images onto light sensitive paper and placed them into the sun. this would of created a outline of the acetate images onto the light sensitive paper.

Cynatypes and Lumen prints
We made handmade negatives and by using the light, we then put them in bleach and water for them to oxidise, we had to wait for them to look yellowish, then making it turn white and brighter, my outcome could of been much better but I left it In the water for too long smudging the image slightly, if I was to redo this experiment then I would choose a image with more objects in and less vast space, I would also layer another image on top instead of 2 to create more of a mix onto the paper.
I created the lumen prints by collecting flowers and leaves and constructing them onto the light sensitive paper in a way that collages nicely with each other, I then flipped the frame and placed it by the window for the sunlight to create prints of the plants. This is a photographic process since its cameralessly copying the flowers by leaving imprint.
This is the result of lumen prints which I think turned out really well, the contrast of the browns, what worked well was the bits that were pressed down the most have the lightest areas since there is less light in those areas, creating exact replicas of the brown leaves i put down since they are the same colour.
If i could improve it I would add bugs like butterflies to so the silhouette so their wings and body would be imprinted along with more flowers.
I personally really like this process I think its such a simple activity but still has a really nice affect but I wish it could portray the colours of the colours instead of just browns to make it more exciting.
Pinhole photography |
|
a pinhole camera is a simple camera is a without a lens but a tiny aperture, by using a pin piercing it through a piece of aluminium. light from the scene goes through the hole and the light goes onto the light sensitive paper, projecting a inverted image,
camera obscura is similar but with a whole room being blacked out turning it into the camera. |
I made a pinhole camera by taking a old iPhone box and completely blocking out all the light from the outside black paint, next I cut a square hole onto the lid of the box, then stuck down a piece of aluminium, thirdly, I purchased a very small aperture by using a pin. lastly, I made a makeshift flap to cover the aperture before using it to take the photo. we used light-sensitive paper to take our photographs outside, using the sunlight rather than artificial. I used a iphone box because they let little to no light in and are easy to use and fit the light senistive paper in.
