Evidence attempt
We used photographs from Ebay the same way Sultan and Mandel did from different archives and offices.
photography
- in 1977 in calafornia two american photographers named mike and larry published their book evidence
- 38 years later this work in a festival became a seen for a exhibition like a contemporary approaches to photography
- beyond evidence looked at some of the methods used to create new ways of presenting images and information
- the term evidence in the exhibition explores truthfulness of the imagine to evaluate if the image is actually a reality
- they went to over 100 places and looked through 3 million images and narrowed it down to 59
- putting the pictures into new relationships creates a new narrative that is only seen in a visual way since their is nothing else to go off which mandel has called the poet narrative
- the image becomes a actor within a political movement in order to tell a story
- when the image is taken out of context it can play with what we consider truth ,responded by mixing her own photographic interpretations with real
- sean greenhold and sarah pickering has taken an approach that is similar to the mandel and sultans book beyond evidence in that it puts different images and objects together in an installation at the derby museum along with sculptures
- the project is a result of being frustrated with the truth the viewer is a collaborator on the piece of work since they are giving their own opinions
At this point in history as a society we are less truthful of images because of social media and the fast rate that technology is developing its much easier now to develop fake images or deep fakes since we have photoshop and other editing apps, Also because of social media all it takes is one person on social media to post a fake image of someone or something and for it to be shared and seen as real. AI is also growing rapidly from just essays to now image and sound.
This is a challenge for modern photographers since it's harder for them to portray and prove that their images are authentic not being staged or a fake.
photographers may want to to play around in this grey area, by creating something partially fake by say dressing someone up or pretending to be someone else. Taking advantage of the grey area since if people are already going to make accusations saying that the image is unauthentic they should mess around and create new ways of photography.
The grey area is open for interpretation , and up to the person looking at it to decide, the view on the image/images can be seen in multiple different ways depending on the perspective they are being shown at or no perspective at all. for an example someone who was looking at the image they might look at it differently due to how they are feeling on that day or who they are as a person.

Grey area
I went around school and looked into places that in my eyes were a grey, or which were seen as unknown , a grey area is 'an area or situation in which it is difficult to judge what is right and what is wrong'. I took images in places that had spots that you wouldn't know why it was there or what was to say 'lurking' in the image, for a example all the doors that were locked around school which i don't know what are behind or what they are for. this creates a absence of knowledge and gaps for me to fill even though I may actually never know whats behind there.
I took these pictures outside school as homework as a story, the story is a journey of urban landscapes as I made my way through London, there is no set story or events other then what ever you can connect or link together to create a timeline. Similar to the evidence book but mine are clear to where I got them since theyr'e all from the same general area, however with evidence is all unknown and from different places.
Jack latham
In the sugar paper theories, Latham uses a colour coding system to show different types of information throughout the book, they reenact the photos that were taken from the police archives, being on black paper, this relating to newspaper articles which are on pink sugar paper. the book also included many diary entries from the suspects which are on thin white paper. It is called sugar paper series because the writer used to jot things down on sugar paper and put them all in a folder.

Sugar paper theories (2016)
sugar paper theories is a book he published in 2016. He explores a story of true crime about two men from Iceland, who are convicted but didn’t committed a crime of a murder in the 1970s. Lathams book explores how the police handled the situation, interviews. Latham’s approach presents how complex the case was and shines the light on truth and justice. He write this to deep dive into the murder case in Iceland, he wanted to use archival material to search for the details of the case and analyse. The book has many pictures of the investigation and Iceland throughout and also pieces of sugar paper. Since that’s what he used to write his notes on in his office before writing the book. The sugar paper theories offers a sense of uncertainty for the photograph by opening a new set of questions. The name sugar paper theories give me connotations of mystery and conspiracy leaving me questioning for lack of answer. Museum in Iceland, which has a gallery of the photographs. REYKJAVÍK MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY Grófarhús, Tryggvagata 15, top floor 101 Reykjavík A parliament of owls (2019) Chocolate from explores the conspiracy and illusion that has surrounded. California is Bohemian Grove and his most recent series parliament of owls, the images in his book of people are directly centre frame, this creates an eery effect to the image or seen as unusual. they are also all black and white which again creates a effect of unease even though every image is partially different this is the similarity. Everything is taken in a certain way on purpose since this continuous theme is throughout, however the last image is in colour which is of a lake in jack Lathams hometown. |

CLOCKS FOR SEEING.
My project is going to be based on the word sonder which is realising that everyones life is as complicated and abstract as your own, everyone has there own problems, families and friends just like you, like judging someone without knowing what they are going through who have been through.
my images are going to be of my family or friends feeling whatever they are feeling at the time and expressing, or of strangers which are just doing normal things like laughing or crying with eachother. My own version of this is the term 'human being human' and living whoever you want to. 'To be human is to acknowledge that there is no such thing as perfection and that most of us are doing the best we can most of the time.' |

Nial McDiarmid is a photographer who does environmental photography by going up to sometimes strangers asking to take a photograph of them on the street in many different towns he travels too. He matches there clothing to the surroundings and centred them from feet to head or from knee up.
All these images are different, some old and most new, some being strangers and some being people that I know just doing normal things that people do and having a good time.
PHOTOZINE
This photozine was made in InDesign, I took a template and replaced the old images with my own, I changed parts by changing the colour of page and also fonts. I took my images most on the trip but also some outside school, a mix of portraits and landscape framed images. Some of people even and strangers and other of the urban world around London. I tried my best to keep a theme between all the images so they look uniform and best as possible together. To push my work even further I converted the old zine to cartridge paper which immediately gives off a more elevated and expensive look compared to just normal paper, If i was to do this task again I would make a completely new layout in my own format so it feels more orginal I would also make a another page with colour by using the printer |
